Professor Miri Yemini leads a research group focusing on global dimensions of education. The research group conducts multidisciplinary studies aimed at understanding policy-making processes in the field of education, examining the practices of various stakeholders in educational systems worldwide, and proposing approaches to enhance educational practices within and beyond schools. Between the years 2023 and 2028, Professor Yemini is leading a large international research funded by the European Research Council, with the goal of studying youth activism in diverse contexts, including climate crisis and human rights. Research within the group belongs to the fields of comparative education and sociology of education. Researchers in the group come from different countries, diverse disciplinary backgrounds, and various fields of interest.

Ph.D. student Margarita Kiryushuna

The study “Exploration of the Dynamics of International and National Discourses on STEM Education” focuses on educational policy changes in Israel and Russia between 2003 and 2023. The study continues previous studies on mechanisms of international organizations’ influence on local educational systems (compulsory education level) through cooperation, evaluation, and competition. Special attention is paid to the OECD, the World Bank, and UNESCO as main international players in the field of education. 

The research aim is to explore discourses produced by IOs and national actors concerning STEM K-12 education. To reach the aim Maarten Hajer’s Argumentative Discourse Analysis will be used: it allows to make both macro-level and micro-level examinations, enabling an in-depth exploration of the broader context of discourse as well as the finer details present in the texts and interviews.

The study relies on two types of data: 

  • expert interviews (with current and former policymakers, representatives of international organizations, teaching specialists, and scholars), 
  • documents (regular publications, publications in educational projects, annual reports, news, representatives’ speech transcripts, etc.). 

The project will be developed between 2024 and 2027.
