SUMMARY:SEMINAR: The Role of Executive Functions in Language Processes in T
ypical and Atypical Development: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging S
 tudy. By: Ph.D Raya Meri
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:\n Location:כיתה 307\, הפקולטה לחינוך
  למדע וטכנולוגיה\n Zoom: \n Abstract:\nExecutive functions (
EF) are a variety of cognitive processes supporting learning and academic
activities such as reading. It is evident that children with atypical read
ing development\, such as dyslexia and Rolandic epilepsy\, show deficits i
n EF. These individuals also share challenges in reading and narrative com
prehension\, and it is assumed that these difficulties are attributed to t
heir challenges in EF.\nThree studies conducted during this PhD aimed to c
ompare the involvement of EF and associated neural networks during reading
and narrative comprehension in 8-15 year-old Hebrew and English speaking
typical readers\, children with dyslexia and children with Rolandic epilep
sy using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Overall\, the findi
ng point at a crucial involvement of EF in narrative and reading comprehen
sion processes\, with distinct patterns of EF involvement were found in ch
ildren with atypical reading development. This work supports the need to i
nclude EF in reading development models\, such as the Simple View of Readi
ng model.\nshort  bio:\nAfter completing her B.A in psychology from the u
niversity of Haifa\, Raya started her Master’s degree in the Educational
Neuroimaging lab. Raya moved to a direct PhD track and her research focus
ed on the role of executive functions in reading and narrative comprehensi
on in children with typical and atypical language development. The main po
pulations she worked with were children with epilepsy and children with dy
 slexia.
