SUMMARY:הרצאה: ד"ר נעמה סדן. מארחת: פרופ' טלי ט
 ל
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:\n Location:\n Zoom: \n Networks\, Norms and Education
al Change: The Case of Environmental Learning\nThe aspiration to transform
society through educational innovation is a primary motivator for individ
uals\, organizations\, governments\, and a myriad of cultural actors. Howe
ver\, the implementation of these innovations often falters when faced wit
h entrenched organizational and institutional barriers. This talk addresse
s a fundamental question in educational research: How do collective struct
ures create the conditions for change\, and how do individual and organiza
tional actors successfully navigate institutional constraints to enact tha
 t change?\nTo answer this question\, I review a few studies I conducted to
examine the implementation of the new environmental education approach in
San Mateo County\, California. Drawing on institutional theory\, I analyz
e the implementation of environmental education at the meso-level of organ
izational structures\, focusing on the critical roles of networks and norm
 s. The majority of my talk will focus on findings from a study of 95 teach
er entrepreneurs leading environmental education initiatives\, demonstrati
ng how their success was shaped by network dependency and institutional no
rm alignment. This case study illuminates the broader institutional challe
nges of advancing educational change\, concluding with recommendations f
or how networks and norms can be intentionally designed to facilitate rath
er than constrain such innovation.\nI will conclude by presenting two curr
ent directions of my work. One\, looking into the future\, asks how we can
utilize large-scale datasets to manage environmental education integratio
n at the school district level. The second\, drawing on past practices\, t
akes a new approach to bridging science and religious education\, explorin
g how teaching ritual behaviors and community rituals can and already do s
hape norms of environmental practice.\n\nShort Bio: \nNaama Sadan is a p
ostdoctoral researcher at the Stanford Graduate School of Education and an
affiliate of the Ardoin Socioecology Lab. She is a former high school tea
cher and current researcher working on fostering cultural shifts toward en
vironmental sustainability in institutions. Originally from Jerusalem\, Is
rael\, she completed her Ph.D. at the Hebrew University\, conducting field
work in California as a visiting student researcher at UC Berkeley. Her di
ssertation examined the organizational structures that support eco-literac
y integration in school districts. At Stanford\, her research explores the
role of rituals in promoting environmental education and sustainable beha
viors in both religious and non-religious contexts. Naama also serves as c
o-chair of the Applied Collaboratory for Religion and Ecology (ACRE)\, a S
tanford-based initiative\, and is an advisor for the California Eco-Litera
cy Initiative (CALEI)\, advancing sustainability education integration in
 California schools.\n\n
